Many people see their pets as part of the family. In fact, to some their dog or cat may be one of their closet friends. Unfortunately, under the law pets are not viewed the same as people when they are lost in an accident as a result of someone’s negligence.
Pets are viewed as personal property and as such their is no recovery for sentimental or non-economic damages when they are lost in an accident. The best that an owner could hope for is replacement value for a new dog, cat or bird.
As a consequence think twice before you grab your pet to run errands with you or just go for a ride in the car. It is hard to strap them down and they suffer significant injuries when involved in collisions. The law will not allow you to recover for the grief associated with such a loss and it isn’t worth the risk.
